Location: a sealed volume beneath the Crown Sanctuary, below and separate from the Redoubt, unnumbered.

The location field on this record requires a survey reference. There is no survey reference. The volume does not appear on the deck plans of the Sanctuary, on the civil survey of the plateau, on the register of sealed works, on the schedule of founding-era construction, or at any point in the corpus, in any of its five copies, at any revision.

It was not exempted, screened or concealed by instrument. There is no Blindspot on it and no order suppressing it and no clause anywhere that mentions it in order to protect it. It was never written down.

The location field is completed not surveyed, which the format permits for works predating the survey standard, and a note is appended stating that the provision is being used correctly and for the reason the provision exists.

Filed year one hundred and ninety-one, day four. Access.

Access is by a single closure at the base of the Sanctuary undercroft, behind a wall which is structural and which is load-bearing and which was poured with the closure already in it.

The closure has one release. The release is not keyed to an instrument, a registry, a lattice signature or a name. It is keyed to a sequence which was set once, at construction, and which was held in the head of the man who set it and nowhere else.

The sequence is held. It is entered. The closure releases at the first attempt, on the mechanism it was built with, having been left for two hundred and forty years without service.

Condition on release: nominal. The mechanism is dry, the seals are sound, and the four secondary catches are within tolerance. It was over-built. Everything he built alone was over-built and the record has said so about eleven other items and says it again here.

Entry made. Duration since last opening: two hundred and forty years, to the resolution the record can support, which is the construction date and not better.

The volume has not been entered by any person in that period. This is stated as a finding and not as a conclusion, and the working is as follows.

The closure has one release and one sequence. The sequence was never written, transmitted, filed or spoken aloud in any account, deposition, hearing or private paper in the corpus.

Forced entry would be visible. The wall is unbroken, the pour is original, the four secondary catches are seated in their original positions, and the settlement dust on the inner sill is undisturbed to a depth consistent with the elapsed period.

Nine people held the highest access on this planet for a hundred and forty years and none of them held this. It is not in the schedule of works they inherited. Most of them did not know the volume existed and the record has no means of establishing whether any of them did.

No civil process, audit, inventory or estate action has ever named it. Four estate actions were run over the Sanctuary. All four are in the corpus. None of them reaches below the undercroft.

Finding: the volume has been closed since construction and is opened here for the first time.

Custody of a work not on any register is established under the founding-era provision for unregistered private works, which requires the custodian to state the basis of custody in one line and to file it once.

Basis: the information that was stored in Aurelio Calder's head includes the sequence, the plan of the volume, the schedule it runs on and the reason it was built.

The provision requires nothing further and nothing further is filed. The record has never claimed on any document, at any point in one hundred and ninety-one years, that having that information constitutes being that person, and it does not claim it here. It states what it holds. Custody follows from what it holds and not from what it is.

Optical range at the measured density: a hand at arm's length is not resolvable. This is the design condition and not a degradation of it.

The volume is being maintained. It is not a remainder. It is being made, now, at the rate specified, by plant that has been running continuously.

Service interval: the schedule specifies a full pass at eleven years. It has never had one. It has run for two hundred and forty years on the tolerances it was built to and it is, on inspection at nine hundred and eleven points, serviceable.

The process was commissioned once. The commissioning instruction is held in the construction papers, which are in this volume and are not in the corpus, and it is one line long.

It specifies a density, a tolerance and a schedule. It does not specify a duration, a review, a termination condition, a person authorised to stop it, or a circumstance in which it would be stopped.

The founding-era commissioning form had no field for a stopping clause. Fourteen of the standing works commissioned in that period carry the same omission and four of them are still running. The record has filed against three of the four in previous volumes: the exoskeleton line, the fabrication swarm, and the hall.

This is the fourth. It was commissioned by the same person, on the same form, in the same year, and it has run for the same reason, which is that nothing was ever told to stop.

Item one. The four growing volumes have run two hundred and forty years of unmanaged generations on the original stock. Genetic drift is present, has been sampled at forty-one loci, and is within the range the original notes anticipate. The crop is the crop he planted.

Item two. Filtration has passed the volume's full contents through nine stages approximately four hundred and eleven thousand times. Stage media were specified as replaceable at eleven years and have not been replaced. Measured efficiency across all nine: ninety-nine per cent of specification. They were over-built.

Item three. The closure seals have held a pressure differential continuously. Leakage to the undercroft, integrated over the period, is below the threshold at which anything above would have been detectable by any instrument that has ever been pointed at that wall.

Item four. The adjoining clear volumes have been ventilated, lit and thermally held on the same commissioning instruction, for the animals, which are addressed separately at Entry 4501 and following.

One. The series is within tolerance at every sample of the entire period except during four hundred and nine recorded excursions, all of which are the closure being opened, all of which recover to specification within nine hours, and the last of which is two hundred and forty years old.

Two. The four hundred and nine excursions are the complete record of every occasion on which any person entered this volume. They are not spaced evenly. They cluster and then thin and then stop, which is what a man's calendar looks like from the inside of a sensor that was not built to hold one.

The dosing head does not meter to a schedule and does not meter to a clock. It reads the occupant's own apparatus directly, on the founding-era telemetry channel, and meters introduction against what the apparatus reports.

Control mode as set: hold. The head is configured to bring the occupant to a stated condition and to hold that condition level, correcting in both directions, for as long as the mask is worn. It is not configured to a curve. There is no ramp, no taper and no accumulating setpoint. The state is flat, and the mask spends its entire operating time defending the flatness against a body that is metabolising.

Setpoint as left: a single stored value, unchanged across all three thousand nine hundred and forty-one logged hours. It was set once, at commissioning, and never revised.

Control function tested against the internal reference. Pass. Stored setpoint intact and readable.

The volume has no optical range at specification density. The vision system exists so that the volume does not have to be cleared.

Note on the design intent, taken from the construction papers and not inferred: clearing the volume was available at all times, at a cost of nine hours, on plant already installed. It was never the intended remedy. The mask was built so that the room would not have to be changed.

One. The nine fittings are retained on the schedule at the standard interval. They serve no function at specification density. They were installed anyway, at commissioning, by somebody who knew the density he was specifying, and the record has no basis for removing them and does not remove them.

Two. All instrumentation in this volume is non-optical and was specified non-optical from the outset. No instrument in the sector has ever required a person to look at it.

Three. Work at the fabrication bench, reading, writing and movement are all supported at full function by the mask's vision system, which is a non-optical channel, and by the apparatus, which is another. Neither of them is affected by density.

Four. Clearing the volume is available at nine hours' notice on installed plant and returns full optical range. It has been available continuously for two hundred and forty years. The density log records no occasion on which it was used.
