The nine crates are the household's own. They have been on the shelf road since the previous day because the shelf road is where the provisioning cart stops, and between the cart and the second tier there are ninety-one steps cut into rock, and for four generations everything that has ever gone up them has gone up them on somebody's back.

The unit does it in one hour and fifty-five minutes. There is no field in the record for how long it would otherwise have taken, so there is no comparison anywhere in the document, and there never will be.

Nothing is asked of it between 11:36 and the end of the day. It records the hour anyway, on the hour, because the schema has a field for position and a field for time and no field for whether either of them is worth writing down.

The household designation field is written once at 09:41, at siting, by the fitting crew, and it is written NOT SET, which is what the field contains when the crew has nothing to put in it. The county's published return for the second tier will print the class string in that column instead. HALO. It will print it for eleven years.

The last field on that line is the one that matters, and it will not matter for eleven more years, and when it starts to matter nobody will announce it.

It is a founding-era field. Later runs of the hall drop it, on the reasonable ground that a record of who has read a record is not part of the operation of a machine. This unit is off the first run, assembled on tooling that had already stood eleven years, and it writes the field every night of its working life because nobody ever tells it not to. There is no body on this planet that normalises anything.

Tonight it writes: none.

The following is not part of the runtime. It is the paperwork that put the unit in the dwelling, and it is reproduced here whole, which takes four lines.

That is the whole of it. It is entirely correct. It mentions nobody by name except the applicant, because the applicant signs and the decliner does not, and there is no field anywhere on the form for why a person standing in their own doorway would look at a machine that had come to carry things for them and say no thank you.

The fourth line is a kindness. Somebody in the Allocation Division wrote it, or more likely somebody wrote it once, years earlier, into the template, so that it would be printed on every re-siting note forever and no unit would ever carry a mark for having been refused. It has been printed here. It will never be read by anybody in this dwelling.

The third line is the one that decides the book.

Dwelling is unledgered. No entry made, per amendment.

The amendment is eight words long in the instrument and it was written to protect these people. Before it, a unit could only be sited into a dwelling that existed on the register, and a dwelling that existed on the register was a dwelling whose residents existed on the register, and there are four generations of people on this shelf who are on no register anywhere. The amendment says: site them anyway, and make no entry. Do not create a record of a person in order to give them a machine. Take nothing from them in exchange.

It works. It is the most humane sentence any authority on this planet produces in the whole of the third year, and every consequence of it is correct.

There is no Birth Ledger entry for anybody in this dwelling. There will be no death recorded for any of them, anywhere, ever. Their names appear in no public document on Aura-36 and will not, at any point in the next fifty-seven years, appear in one.

Except in this.

The runtime does not know that it is the only archive four people have. It has no field for that either. It logs the second day the way it logs the first, which is completely, and in the order things happened, and with the time each one took.

In fifty-two years' time, in a room in the capital, four people will decide not to read it. Their reasoning will be sound. One of them will say that there is no way to read the fleet without reading the houses, and that a record of what a unit did in a room is a record of the room, and he will be right, and the argument will end there because it is unanswerable.

This is one of the houses.

The provisioning cart stops on the shelf road on the second day of every Tide. Between the shelf road and the second tier there are ninety-one steps. Tace is fifty-eight. Her hip has been wrong since the fire, which was twenty-two years ago, and she has carried her share up those ninety-one steps every second day of every Tide for forty years, including the twenty-two.

On the second day of the third Tide of Founding, her son issues a task.

Two minutes. The task completes at 06:39 and is reversed at 06:41, and the second line is the third clause of the instruction set working exactly as written. No reason is required. No reason is recorded. No reason may be asked for.

The reversal does not undo the carrying. The provisions are up the steps and they stay up the steps; a reversal is not a rewind, it is an instruction that the task is not to stand. What it undoes is the future. Task 0044 is struck from the pattern, and the unit does not offer it again on its own, because a unit that offered a reversed task again would be a unit that had decided the household was wrong.

So Ivo issues it again.

The interval between completion and reversal shortens across the run. It is forty-one seconds on the fourth. It is nothing at all on the sixth, which is to say the two entries carry the same timestamp to the minute, which is as fine as this schema resolves.

There is no field for who performs a reversal. Any resident may reverse any task; the clause does not distinguish between them and neither does the record. The runtime writes REVERSED BY HOUSEHOLD because the household is the unit of account, and a machine that logged which member of a family had countermanded which other member of a family would be an instrument of a different kind entirely, and Calder appears to have thought about that for some time.

So the document cannot tell anybody who is doing this. It can only count.

Eleven times. Nineteen days. The eleventh is on a Slip, and on that same Slip, eight hours later, the first SEAL is issued and completed and not reversed, and nobody looking at this page for the first time has any reason to notice it.

Then Ivo stops issuing it.

The record does not say that he gave up, because giving up is not a task and has no verb. It says that Task 0044 and its ten successors were issued, completed and reversed, and that after the third day of the first Tide of Kush no further task of that description appears in the runtime for three years and forty-one days.

What the runtime does record, on the second day of every Tide from that point, without comment, is nothing at all.

It is standing at the north wall while she comes up. It is not waiting for her, because WAIT is a different verb and this is not it. It has no task. It is at its position, on the hour, as the schema requires, and the schema requires it at 06:00 and at 06:30 and at 07:00, and the provisioning run takes her from about ten past six to about seven, and so the record of those three hours is three lines of a machine standing at a wall.

The four hundredth reversal in this document arrives in the thirty-first year. Between here and there the token appears against tasks in the kitchen, tasks on the stair, tasks in the store, tasks with the cats, tasks nobody could reconstruct a reason for now, and every single one of them is a person exercising a right that a man in a sealed room wrote down for them before any of them were born.

The third clause is the best-drafted line in the instruction set. It says a household may refuse help and owes nobody an explanation. It is the only one of the eleven that is about dignity rather than about safety, and it went in because somebody understood that the thing which breaks people is not being unable to manage but being watched failing to.

It does not help here. It works perfectly and it does not help.

A standing task is a task that does not have to be issued again. It has an hour and it has a description and it runs until somebody stands it down, and the record marks it STANDING on the days it runs and NOT ISSUED on the days it does not, and the difference between those two tokens is fifty-seven years long.

The household sets its first one nine days after the last reversal. It is for the cats.

There are two cats. They are indoors, they came up the ninety-one steps in a box four years before the unit did, and they are not named anywhere in this document at any point in fifty-seven years, because the schema has a field for the class of animal and no field for a name it was not given. They appear two thousand three hundred and something times as animal.

Nobody hesitates about this for a second. The litter, the feeding, the water and, in the eleventh month, the run down to the shelf road with a box and back up with the same box, all of it goes through the unit inside the first month, and no one in the dwelling raises a single objection to a machine handling the two living things in the house that cannot ask it not to.

Hold on to that. It is refuted in twelve chapters and never mentioned again.

What accumulates after Standing Task 001 is ordinary. This is the chapter where the hours of a house get written down, and they get written down because a machine that stands at a wall on the hour is an instrument that records when a room is empty.

Task 0147 is issued by a four-year-old and reversed inside two minutes, and it is the only task Bry issues in the whole of Year 3. She will issue about nineteen thousand more.

Seven hours of that day, from nine in the morning to four in the afternoon, are a machine at a wall. Tace is in the dwelling for all seven of them. There is no task in the record because no task was asked for, and there is no line in the record saying that a woman and a machine were in a house together for seven hours and one of them did not speak to the other, because that is not a fact this instrument is built to hold.

What it holds is the hours. And the hours say that this house wakes at twenty past five, that Tace is the one who wakes it, that she heats the stove and draws the water and fetches the goods herself in the first forty-five minutes of every day before anybody else is up, and that from the moment her son comes into the room at half past seven the tasks are his and Sen's until the evening.

She is up first. She has been up first for forty years. It is the one part of the day in which she is the only person in the room, and the machine at the wall is not a person, and there is nobody at all to see her do it.

Three tasks are available in those forty-five minutes and none of them is issued. The stove, the water, the dry goods off the high shelf in the store. The unit stands at the north wall and logs each one as it comes and goes, at 05:22, at 05:40 and at 06:00, and the entries say what the entries always say, and she carries the water herself.

On the sixth day of the fourth Tide of Kush a task appears that is not in any published list, was not asked for by any county, and has no clause behind it.

Two entries, same minute, same verb, same locus. One on the way in and one on the way out. The unit takes the shoes off at the threshold when it enters the dwelling and puts them on at the threshold when it leaves it, and from this day it will do that every time it crosses that line for the rest of the document.

There is no task for making them. The household made them, and the household is not an instrument and does not log. What the record shows is the consequence: the day before, the unit crosses the threshold eleven times and the crossings are not in the log at all, because crossing a threshold is not work. The day after, there are twenty-two entries.

Ivo makes them. He works hide and he works cord and he has the tools for it because everything on this shelf is made on this shelf, and the unit's feet are not a shape any pattern he owns was cut for. The evidence that it took him more than one attempt is not in this document and is not anywhere.

The unit does not need them. It tracks nothing in. Its feet are sealed and it cleans them, and there are entries in the first Tide showing exactly that — CLEAN, threshold, twice a day — which is the ordinary provision and is entirely sufficient.

So the shoes are not for the floor.

The record cannot say what they are for. It has POSITION and it has footwear and it has threshold, and it will have them forty thousand times, and it has nothing else. It cannot say that a man who has spent nineteen days watching his mother refuse to be helped went and made a pair of shoes for the thing that offered, so that when it came into her house it would come in the way a person comes in. It cannot say whether that is what happened. It cannot say whether he thought about it in those words, or in any words at all, or whether he simply could not stand the sight of it standing at the wall with nothing on its feet.

It cannot say, because the schema has no field for why, and because the man never said, and because the only two witnesses were a four-year-old who does not remember it and an instrument that recorded it completely.

By the second day the issuer field is empty. Nobody is asking for it any more. It has become part of what crossing the threshold is, the way the litter at seven is part of what seven is, and the unit will go on doing it through three generations of dogs and four deaths and fifty-seven years of Tides, in shoes that are replaced when they wear out by the same hands until those hands stop, and then by other hands.

The last line of this book is one of these entries. It is fifty-seven years from here, in an empty dwelling, and it reads exactly the same as this one.

NOT ISSUED is not a refusal and it is not a request. It is what the tenth clause produces: a unit that cannot complete a task stops, and records that it stopped. A unit standing at a wall with fifty observations of a stair and a resident on it has a task available to it and no instruction, and the schema logs the availability and the absence in one line, because a founding-era engineer thought that a record of what a machine did not do was part of a complete record of what it did.

The fleet drops that too, in the second run, on the ground that it produces enormous volumes of nothing.

At 11:41 a woman of fifty-nine goes down ninety-one steps cut into rock. At 16:22 she comes back up them. Between those two timestamps there are four hours and forty-one minutes with no entries in them at all except a machine at a wall, on the hour, five times, in an empty house.

The descending times hold to within twenty-four minutes across nine days. The ascending times do not. They are 16:22, 16:04, 16:31, 16:19, 16:47, 16:58, 17:12, 17:26.

There is no field for that. The unit is not measuring it. The numbers are in the record because every task that is not issued is stamped with the hour at which it was not issued, and the hour at which it was not issued is the hour she reached the top.

Nobody reads this document for another ten years.

That is the chapter.

One length of cord, from the store to the long room, two minutes, completed, not reversed. It is the four hundred and eleventh task the unit performs that month and it is indistinguishable in the record from any of the other four hundred and ten. There is no field that marks a task as the first of anything. The schema does not know that this issuer field has been empty for fourteen months, because the schema does not compare a line to the lines above it; it writes the line and moves on.

What can be said about it from inside the document is this. It is fifteen forty-seven in the afternoon. Ivo is on the shelf road, because it is the fifth day and the fifth day is when the second tier goes down. Sen is in the counties. Bry is seven and is in the room, and there is one entry against her that afternoon, at 15:31, LIFT, reversed at 15:32, which is what all nineteen of her tasks that year look like.

So there is nobody in the dwelling but a seven-year-old, a machine, and a woman of fifty-nine who wants a length of cord that is on a shelf in the store.

The store is eleven steps down from the long room. Not ninety-one. Eleven.

She does not issue another task for seven months.

The document does not present that as a fact. It has no way to. What it has is two hundred and eleven days of entries in which the issuer field reads IVO or SEN or BRY or is empty, and then, in the third Tide of Velvet in the fifth year, it reads TACE again, once, for a vessel that needs carrying eleven steps.

Between those two lines the unit performs eight thousand four hundred and something tasks. It stands at the north wall roughly five thousand times. It records, on the second day of every Tide, the hour at which it did not assist on a stair, and the hours drift later by about ninety seconds a year, which is not a rate anybody is calculating and is simply what the numbers do.

The instruction set does not require a unit to offer. The second clause says it does the work that is asked of it and does not determine what work is worth doing, and a unit that presented itself at the top of the stair twice a Tide for seven months would be a unit that had formed a view about a woman's hip, and there is no clause that permits that and one that forbids it outright.

So it stands at the wall, and she comes up, and the record of the fourth and fifth years is complete and correct and contains everything except the only thing in it that mattered.

The eighth clause requires that the standing tasks of every dwelling be published quarterly by county, without address and without names. It is a transparency provision. It exists so that any citizen can see what the six million machines in the houses have been instructed to do, and it is honoured completely, every quarter, for fifty-seven years, by a body that has no idea it is doing anything remarkable.

This is the second-tier return for Fissure 9, first quarter, Year 5, reproduced as printed.

Three standing tasks. The first is the cats.

The second and third are the two that are never explained.

They were set in the first year, eleven days apart, and they are not in this document's power to account for. SEAL on Slip: the outer store, sealed, once every nine days, on the third day of the Tide. HEAT on Drift: the stove in the long room, heated, once every nine days, on the fifth. Both completed. Both never reversed. Both still running in the fifty-seventh year, on the same two days, in the same two verbs, through every single thing that happens to this household between here and the end.

Two is worse than one. One would be a chore. Two is a pattern, and a pattern is a thing a reader solves, and there is nothing here to solve. There is no reason in the record because the schema has no field for a reason, and there is no reason outside the record either, and the author does not have one and is not withholding one.

What matters about this page is the column on the left.

DESIGNATION reads HALO. That is not a name. It is the class string — what the unit is — printed into the column where a household's name for its own machine is supposed to go, because the field is NOT SET and the return will not leave a cell empty. Six million households on this planet have called theirs something by now. Bell. Pim. Tuesday. Sixth. Multi. Mildly embarrassing, all of them, and everybody does it.

This one has been running for two years and has not been called anything.

And the two lines above it say Address: not held. Residents: not held. This is a public register, printed by a county, filed and readable by any citizen who asks, and it establishes beyond argument that at Fissure 9, on the second tier, there is a dwelling with three standing tasks in it, and that the county does not know where it is or who lives in it, and has correctly declined to find out.

Nine columns, eleven counties, and one row that is the closest thing to a public record these four people will ever have. It does not contain their names. It contains their cats, their store and their stove.

Task 1506 is issued at 08:14 and completed at 08:52. The gap is thirty-eight minutes, which is what a climb from the second tier to the fourth with cord and hide takes, and the unit has done it eleven times before at between thirty-six and forty-one minutes.

Inside that interval, at 08:33:14, the runtime records eleven seconds in which nothing executes.

The seventh day is ordinary. So is the eighth. The Tide closes with one hundred and ninety-one entries, two reversals and no exceptions claimed, and the quarterly return goes in on time, and nothing in this dwelling is different in any respect that this instrument is capable of recording.

In the sixth year the county revises the published standing-task schedule. It is an administrative act. It is notified in the ordinary way, which is that the revised list is published under the eighth clause in the quarter it takes effect, and no other notice is given, because no other notice is required.

Eleven of this dwelling's tasks are affected.

Nothing about the work changes. The cats are fed at seven and at nineteen. The store is sealed on Slip. The stove is heated on Drift. Every verb, every hour, every locus is identical on the eighth day of Siphon to what it was on the seventh.

What changes is the order. Standing Task 001 is now the store and Standing Task 003 is now the cats, because the revised schedule groups by locus rather than by the order in which a household happened to ask, and somewhere in the county a person has decided, correctly, that grouping by locus is better.

The runtime records the reissue and not the reason. There is no field for a reason. There is no field for who signed the revision, or which committee sat, or whether anybody in this county has ever been to Fissure 9, or whether the person who renumbered these eleven lines knew that one of them was a dwelling with no address in it.

The record simply becomes, from this day, a record in which the numbers mean something else.

Every standing task in this book from here to the end carries its reissued number. Standing Task 001 is the store. Standing Task 002 is the stove. Standing Task 003 is the cats.

It is the same task. It is Task 0044, five years later, with a different number on it.

The verb is the same verb. The locus is the same locus. The description is the same description, to the word, because the description is generated from the task class and the task class has not changed and could not change. If the eleven entries in the first year were laid beside this one the only difference in the text of them would be the number in the left-hand column.

There are two differences that are not in the text.

The first is that this is a standing task and those were not. Those had to be issued, each time, by somebody, on the morning of the day; each one was a decision a man made about his mother while she was in the room. This one is set once and runs until it is stood down, and after this morning nobody has to decide anything ever again.

The second is the issuer field.

Standing Task 004 is never reversed and it is never stood down.

It runs through the year Ivo's back finishes and the year the dogs are handed over. It runs through the eleven months of Heat and through the year that comes after. It runs through the token appearing against Tace herself in the twenty-seventh year, and it goes on running afterwards, against a resident who generates nothing, STANDING and NOT ISSUED and STANDING and NOT ISSUED, on the second day of every Tide, because a standing task is stood down by a person and there is nobody left who set it and nobody left who would think to.

It is still executing on the last page of this book, fifty-two years from this morning, in an empty dwelling on the second tier at Fissure 9.

There is no field for why she set it. There is no entry anywhere in the runtime for the five years, and there is nothing in the record of the second day of the second Tide of Founding to distinguish it from the second day of any other Tide. The stove is heated at 05:31. The water is not issued. The cats are fed at seven. The unit stands at the north wall on the hour, eleven times.

At 05:44 a woman of sixty-three sets a standing task, and the document records that she set it, and the document is the only thing in the world that knows.

Nine tasks, seventy-five minutes, and at the end of it the room is a different room.

There are three of these and the household's names for them are not names, they are directions. The runtime does not record the names, because the runtime records loci and not what a family calls a thing. It records table, across. It records table, down. It records furniture, walls. The reader learns the three the way the unit learns them, which is by seeing the same nine tasks in the same order enough times that the order stops being nine tasks and becomes one thing with a shape.

The first is the everyday. Table down the length of the room, everything facing the heat, six chairs along it. It is how the room sits for most of every year and it is the one the log has already shown two thousand times without ever making anything of it.

This one, the one on the seventh of Kush, is the second. Table across, chairs pulled in, benches to the walls. It is the arrangement for more people than usual — work nights, mending, anybody down from up the tier — and it goes up in Kush because Kush is when the shelf works together and it comes down again in Ledger.

That is the whole of the mechanism. There is no third block in this chapter. The third arrangement exists, and it is on the cycle, and it comes round in the second Tide of Stillness, and it gets a chapter of its own because of what is in the middle of it.

The published instruction set does not require a unit to wait to be asked twice for the same thing.

This is in the appended operating notes, which are public, which have been public since the schematics went on the register, and which almost nobody has read because they are forty pages of engineering prose behind a document that fits on one side of paper. A unit with fifty logged observations of a task sequence may begin the sequence on its established trigger rather than on the instruction. The trigger here is the first task of the nine. The word the notes use is established. They do not use learned and they do not use expects, and the distinction is not decorative.

On the third day of the second Tide of Stillness in the eighth year, the fiftieth observation completes.

One issuer field, on the first task. Five empty ones after it.

Ivo asks for the floor to be cleared. He does not ask for anything else. By the time he has gone out to the dogs and come back the table is across and the chairs are pulled in and the floor is clean, and the room is Turned Round, and he did not say so.

Nothing about this is a departure. It is the fourth clause holding perfectly: the unit has no preference between one arrangement and another, and is not choosing, and would have done nothing at all if the floor had not been cleared first. It is the second clause holding: it did not determine that the work was worth doing, it observed that this work follows that trigger fifty times out of fifty. It is the published notes doing exactly what they say on page nineteen.

It is also, if you are standing in the room, a machine that starts moving your furniture before you have asked.

The runtime has no field for how that is received. There is no reversal on the third of Stillness, or the next time, or any time. Nobody in fifty-seven years reverses a rearrangement. The record shows the trigger task issued and the remainder unissued and completed, three times a year, for another forty-nine years, and it shows the issuer field on the first task moving between IVO and SEN and BRY as the years go, and it never once shows anybody stopping it.

What it also does not show is anybody remarking on it. There is no entry that could. It is entirely ordinary, and it is entirely unnerving, and this document is incapable of holding either of those facts, and prints the six lines the same way it prints a task about a vessel.

Everything goes to the walls. The floor is cleared and cleaned. And then one chair, which is not one of the six and has never been one of the six, is cleaned and carried out into the middle of the empty floor.

The room is now arranged for sitting with somebody. There is no other way to read a cleared floor with a single chair in the centre of it and every other seat against a wall facing in.

Nobody sits in it.

Four days later it goes back.

The chair appears in this runtime for fifty years and it appears only ever as an object. CLEAN. POSITION. CLEAN. POSITION. There is a field on a task for the resident it is performed for, and on every task involving this chair, in every year, that field is empty. Not once in five decades does the chair generate a task with a person attached to it.

And underneath the rearrangement, every week, on the same day, at the same hour, since the second year:

Ninety-eight minutes, weekly, forever. A standing task Tace set in the early years and nobody ever stood down. What it consists of is in the task class and not in the log: photographs catalogued, dates reconciled, the family's history assembled and kept in order, which is memory-keeping, which is a thing the instruction set has a verb for because somebody thought a household would want it.

In the record it is four words and a duration.

To anybody standing in the room it is a machine working quietly beside a chair for an hour and a half every week, and has been for six years, and will be for another fifty-one.

The document supplies nothing. It does not say whose chair it is. It does not say what the fire was, or when, or that the hip was the least of it. It gives you an object that is cleaned and never used, an arrangement for sitting with somebody that is set up and struck without anybody sitting in it, and a weekly task called memorial with no name in the field, and it puts them on separate pages of separate years, and it never once joins them up.

The reader supplies all of it.

Here is a Tide in the ninth year with nothing in it but the ordinary running of a house. It is included because both of them are in it.

SEAL on the third day. HEAT on the fifth. Slip and Drift.

The store has an outer hatch onto the shelf and it is sealed once every nine days at nine in the morning. Not before weather — the seals do not correlate with anything the shelf logs about weather, and Fissure 9 logs weather because Fissure 9 has to. Not against the season; it runs at the same hour in First-Light and in Stillness. Not on provisioning day; provisioning is the second day and this is the third.

The stove is heated at six in the morning once every nine days, on a day that is not the coldest day of the Tide and not the day anybody bakes and not the day the shelf comes over.

They were both set in the first year, eleven days apart, by a household that had had a machine for less than a season. They are the two oldest running instructions in the document. They are still running in Chapter 50, on the same two days, in the same two verbs, at the same two hours, Tide two thousand three hundred and something, completed.

There is no reason in the record because the schema has no field for a reason. That much is structural and applies to everything here.

But there is also no reason outside the record.

Nobody in this book ever explains them. No later chapter turns them over and shows you the underside. They are not a code, they are not a signal, they do not mark an anniversary, they are not covering anything, and the eleven seconds in Chapter 9 have nothing to do with them. Two is worse than one on purpose: one weekly chore is a chore, and two identical weekly chores on fixed days is a pattern, and a pattern in a document with no adjectives is the only thing a reader has to hold on to, and they will hold on to it for another forty chapters and it will not repay them.

It is the most honest thing in the book. Real people do this. There is a day you seal the store and a day you light the stove and by the ninth year nobody in the house could tell you why either, only that it is Slip and Drift and it has always been Slip and Drift, and the reason, if there ever was one, belonged to a season that ended six years ago.

The unit will do both of them four thousand six hundred more times.

There are four dogs. They are big, they are guard stock, and they are kept by a settlement with no register, no Legion post and no help coming. Their names are GATE, SECOND, POST and BIG, which is how a place with no register names anything — after function or accident, once, and then never again. Big is not the biggest and has not been for years.

Four is too many to walk at once on a shelf four paces wide with a ravine on one side. So they go separately, four times, every day.

Here is a day in the tenth year.

Four times. Every day. Ten years.

Read what is around them. At seven in the morning and seven at night the unit handles the litter, the feed and the water for two cats, and has since the first month, and nobody ever hesitated over it for a second. At sixteen hundred it does it again because there is a sick one. It has carried a four-year-old's water since she was four. It goes up the ninety-one steps with the provisioning for a woman with a bad hip, on a standing task she set herself, and has for two years.

Every chore in this dwelling passes through the unit. Every single one.

Except this.

The log cannot record a decision, because a decision is not a task. It cannot record a conversation, and it is not clear there ever was one. What it records is four lines a day that say a task was available and no instruction came, and it records them one thousand four hundred and sixty times a year, and it has now recorded them fourteen thousand six hundred times.

There is no reason available anywhere in this document. There is no reason available to the household either, and that is the part worth sitting with: they know, factually, that the thing is trusted with a child and trusted with Tace and trusted with two animals that cannot ask it not to. They know it. They could say it out loud. And every evening at ten to seven Ivo puts his coat on and goes out onto a ravine shelf in the dark with the fourth dog, alone, for the ten-thousandth time, because it is not the same and none of them can say why it is not the same.

He is thirty-eight in this chapter. He has been doing it since he was twenty-eight.

He has thirteen more years.

With the lifting done, Sen can take work.

That sentence is the whole causal chain and it needs saying plainly, because nothing in the document will say it. The provisioning goes up the steps without her. The water is drawn, the vessels are cleaned, the floor is done, the stove is lit, the cats are fed twice a day, and the hours that used to be full are not full. So in the eleventh year she takes ledgered work in the counties, and becomes the first person in four generations of this household to appear in any public record on the planet.

It is good work. It pays. Nothing bad happens.

It means travel. The counties are down the ninety-one steps and along the shelf road and out, and the return in Ledger and Stillness is provisioning runs and Ledger's End, which take her away for most of two months, and in the other eight she comes off shift too late.

Every night. Eleven minutes. For thirty-one years, because nobody ever stands it down either.

Now hold the two halves of it together, because the book will not do it for you.

The unit is why she can work. The work is why she is not there. And the thing that is there instead, at four in the morning, doing what she would be doing if she could, is the unit.

Nobody has done anything wrong. Not the county, not the household, not the machine, not Sen. Everybody in this chapter has gained something real: a woman has work and a wage and a name in a ledger for the first time in her family's history, a girl is looked in on every night without fail, a household has more than it had. Every clause of the instruction set is honoured to the letter. The arithmetic is correct in every direction.

Something is lost anyway, and nobody chose it, and there is no field for it, and the log records eleven minutes at 04:11 and moves on to the litter at seven.

The seventh clause says a unit keeps a complete record of its own operation, and that the household may read that record in full, at any hour, without notice.

It is theirs. It was always theirs. Nothing about this required permission from anybody, and nothing in it touches the fleet, which is the whole of the argument the four will have about this class of document forty-one years from now and none of it is contradicted here. A household reading its own unit's log is a woman looking at a list of what happened in her own kitchen.

Eleven days after Standing Task 011 is set, the last line of the day close changes.

That is the field from Chapter 1. It has read none on every day close for eight years and four months. Three thousand and something nights of nobody.

No later unit writes it. The fleet dropped it in the second run on the reasonable ground that a record of who has read a record is not part of the operation of a machine, and it is a fair engineering judgement and this book depends entirely on it having been made too late.

Every night. Between about half past eleven and about a quarter past midnight, which is when a person gets in from the counties.

The field says household, not a name, for the same reason the reversal token says household: the schema does not distinguish between residents and was never going to. So the document cannot tell you who is reading it. It can only tell you that from the eleventh year onward somebody in this dwelling reads the whole of the previous day, every night, immediately on getting home, before sleeping.

What is in the day she is reading: the water at six, the goods fetched at nine, the dry store sorted, a task reversed at four in the afternoon and no reason given, the litter at seven, a chair cleaned, ninety-eight minutes of memorial on the Slack. Her daughter is in it as an issuer field. BRY, BRY, BRY, seventeen times, and at 04:11 that morning TEND, resident BRY, completed, eleven minutes.

She is reading a machine's task list to find out what her own child did that day.

She will do it for thirty-one years.

In Chapter 41 the nightly reads stop before the tasks do, and nobody in the world is in a position to notice that order except the person holding this book.

Four residents. Nothing wrong with any of them. High summer, clear skies over the Mountain-Plains, and a house at full volume.

That is the best day in this book and it is nineteen lines of household chores.

Everything works. A woman of sixty-seven sorts the store and asks for a crate off a high shelf instead of standing on something, and is steadied for four steps at a quarter to one and does not reverse it. A girl of thirteen issues five tasks in a day like it is nothing, because for her it has always been nothing; she was four when it arrived and she has no memory of a house without it. A man carries cut hide to the fourth tier in thirty-eight minutes instead of two hours. Somebody reads the whole thing at twenty to twelve at night.

The chapter's job is abundance, and the trap in it is that you cannot point at the entry that did it. There is no line here that says a life got better. There is a line that says water, and a line that says crate, upper shelf, and a line that says four steps.

Four times, the shelf and an animal and no instruction.

Ninety-eight minutes in the afternoon against a chair.

Read it again in Chapter 44 and every one of those nineteen lines is a knife. Right now it is just a good day in the twelfth year, in high summer, in a house on a shelf, with everybody in it.

Fissure 9 keeps no county observance, because Fissure 9 is in no county.

It keeps the Loom. Annually, in Kush, when the resin comes in: the shelf's own kush harvest processed by the units, the leftover stalk broken down for hemp, and the whole settlement turning it into cloth, cord and fibre. Every group on the shelf grows its own and contributes to the same cloth, because a place with no supply line makes everything it has or does without it.

It is four days long. It is the largest thing that happens on this shelf in any year.

Thirty-one tasks in a day, against a normal nineteen, and it holds for four days. SORT and CLEAR and TEND and DRAW and HEAT in volumes that appear nowhere else in the year. The locus field changes from long room and kitchen and store to shelf, which it does at no other point in any year of this document, and that single field is the only evidence in the runtime that the unit went outside and worked with other people's units on other people's crop.

Note 5720. TEND, retting vat, four hours and twenty-two minutes, no issuer. Four hours of standing over a vat.

Note what is not here.

There is no entry for the fact that this is an occasion. There is no entry for the whole shelf being out on the working ground at once, or for the fact that it is the one time in the year the second tier and the fourth tier are on the same ground, or for what people are wearing, or that the cloth is one cloth and everybody's stalk is in it, or that this is how a settlement with no register and no county and no help coming tells itself it is a settlement.

There is no entry because a runtime has no concept of an occasion. It has verbs, loci, hours and durations. An observance is not a task and cannot be inferred from tasks, and the instrument recording the most important four days of the year records them as a spike in the volume of SORT.

HEAT is also the Drift task. So on the fifth day of the Tide the stove entry sits in the middle of eleven retting-vat entries and is indistinguishable from them at a glance, and the two interfere for the whole month, and neither explains the other, and the document does not notice that either.

This is the best demonstration in the book of what this form cannot see. Everything in it is true. Nothing in it is the thing that happened.

The ninth clause says a unit is repairable, in the dwelling, by a person with no training and one tool.

That is not a slogan. It is a manufacturing constraint, and it was written by somebody who knew that six million machines would go into six million houses on a planet with no service network, no spare-parts economy, no engineers outside two counties and no way for a settlement that is in no county to get anything fixed by anybody. A unit that needs a technician is a unit that is scrap the first time it fails. So the whole thing comes apart on four fasteners and goes back together the same way, and the notes for doing it are printed in the appended documentation in language pitched at somebody who has never opened anything.

In the eleventh year the left shoulder assembly begins to bind.

It stops and records that it stopped, which is the tenth clause, and which is the whole of what it is permitted to do about its own condition. It does not ask. There is no verb for asking.

Fifty-one minutes on a floor with the parts out.

The second line of that block is why the chapter exists. The schema has a field for a second person present on a task performed on the unit, because two people are sometimes needed and the record is meant to be complete. What goes in the field is a name and what they did. Bry is twelve. What she did was hold the light.

It is in the record. A machine wrote down that a twelve-year-old held a light for fifty-one minutes, because the field existed and she was there, and it wrote it in the same weight of type as the fasteners and the tool and the duration.

She has been read this document at bedtime since she was five. She learned to read on the form before she could read anything else: the columns, the tokens, what STANDING means and what NOT ISSUED means and why a reversal has no reason on it. It is the first thing she was ever literate in. The reader's fluency in this book is her fluency, arrived at the same way and at roughly the same speed.

In three years she writes in a field nobody has ever written in.

In forty-three years she does this repair herself, at fifty-four, alone in the room, four fasteners and one tool, in a hand this log has been recording since she was twelve holding a light for her father.

Somebody drew this so that it could be kept by a person who does not know anything. It works. That is all this chapter is: it works, exactly as specified, in a dwelling that is in no register, for a family that no authority on the planet knows exists.

Every day close of this document, for eleven years, has ended on the same three words.

It is the household's name for its own unit. Six million households have filled it in by now. Bell, Pim, Tuesday, Sixth, Multi — mildly embarrassing, all of them, the way people name cars, and everybody does it. The field was put in the founding-era schema by somebody who assumed a family would want to call the thing in their kitchen something.

This one has been running for eleven years and has not been called anything, and the county return has printed the class string in the column instead, because a return will not leave a cell empty. HALO. Forty-four consecutive quarters of it.

On the sixth day of the first Tide of First-Light in the fourteenth year, Bry is fifteen, and writes in it.

That is the joke and she is fifteen and it is a good one. Her father filed out of window without telling his mother, which is why the eleven days happened, which is why a unit that had been refused at a door in the second district came here instead. The whole of this document exists because somebody was late. She has read that in Chapter 2 — she has read all of it, every night, since she was five — and the name she gives the machine is the reason it is theirs.

The field is founding-era. It was carried forward into the current schema unchanged, and it was never meant to be written by a household; the intake path expected a fitting crew to set it and nobody ever built a validator for the other case. So it accepts the value, correctly, and raises a format warning, correctly, and both of those things are the software working as designed.

The consequence is printed.

A small mark beside the name, meaning the value in this cell did not come from where the schema expected it to come from.

It will be there on the next return, and the one after, and every quarter for forty-six years. One hundred and eighty-four consecutive county returns, eleven counties, nine columns, one flagged cell. Nobody at any level of this world has the authority or the inclination to correct it. There is no body on this planet that normalises anything.

It means nothing. Nobody fixes it. It is the closest thing in this book to the unit having a name, and it is a malformed field, and it was put there by a fifteen-year-old making a joke about her father.

Nobody explains it, exactly as Ren never explains Multi and Bo never explains Tuesday.

END OF PART TWO

This is the whole of the second-tier section of the Ridgeline quarterly return, third quarter of the fourteenth year, as printed and filed and made available to any citizen who asks for it.

Eleven counties file one of these every quarter. Ridgeline's runs to eleven sheets. This is sheet nine, and this is the row.

Read the columns across. Address: not held. Residents: not held. Both correct, both required, both the direct product of the amendment that put a unit into an unledgered dwelling and forbade an entry being made. The county is not being careless. The county is obeying a rule written specifically to protect the people in that row from being written down, and it is obeying it exactly.

The result is a line in a public document that says: there is one dwelling here, we do not know where it is, we do not know who is in it, five standing tasks are running, no exceptions were claimed, and the return is complete.

And a small mark beside the only word in the row that came from inside the house.

The warning is correct too. The value in that cell did not come from a fitting authority. It came from a fifteen-year-old at nine in the evening. There is no rule against that and no mechanism to prevent it and no procedure for clearing it afterwards, because nobody drafting the intake path imagined the case, and the note at the bottom of the sheet says what it always says: Return accepted. No action.

No action, one hundred and eighty-four times.

Nobody at any level of this world has the authority or the inclination to correct it. Not the clerk, who has no field for it. Not the county, which accepted the return. Not the fleet, which stopped writing that field a decade ago and has no reason to reach back into a founding-era schema for a dwelling it cannot address. There is no body on this planet that normalises anything, and this is what that sentence looks like when it is printed.

So the row stands. Four generations of people who are in no register anywhere, appearing in the public record of their world exactly once per quarter, as a count of one, with no address, no names, five chores and a validation flag.

The twentieth verb in the lexicon has not appeared in this document. It appears now.

ACCOMPANY is not ASSIST and it is not STEADY. ASSIST is doing a thing instead of somebody. STEADY is a hand on an arm for four steps on a stair. Once a year is not the frequency. The frequency is high — two or three times a Tide in the good years, most days by the end — and what is printed above is the first one of each year, which is a selection made by the person setting this document in front of you and not by the runtime, which selects nothing and would give you all four thousand.

The locus field is the only field that changes.

Shelf road. Shelf road. Shelf road. North end of the second tier. North end. The turn. The turn. The outer step. The outer step. The threshold.

The duration column is doing the same thing from the other direction, and neither column knows the other exists.

That is the chapter. There is nothing else in it and nothing is said about it anywhere in this book. No later entry refers back to it. Nobody in the household ever remarks on it, in the record, because remarks are not tasks. The unit is not measuring it; a unit does not compare a locus to a locus it wrote last year, and if it did there is no field to put the comparison in.

The numbers are here because every task is stamped with where it went and how long it took, and a complete record kept for nine years by something with no opinion about any of it happens to contain, as a by-product, the exact shape of how far a woman could walk.

Ivo is fifty-one. He has walked four dogs separately, four times a day, on a shelf four paces wide, every day, for twenty years. That is roughly twenty-nine thousand walks.

They are not the same four dogs. Gate has been dead eleven years and the second Gate is seven; Post is the second Post; only the shape of it has continued. The log has never recorded a single one of them, because the log records tasks and there has never been a task, and three generations of animals have passed through this dwelling leaving no trace in the only document that says this family existed.

What the log has is fourteen thousand six hundred lines a decade that say a task was available and no instruction came.

His back has been going for four years. Everybody has watched it happen. Nobody has said anything, because there is nothing to say that has not been available to say for twenty years.

All four. The first night. No reversal.

It is carried out magnificently and it is carried out magnificently from the first attempt, and the reason is printed in a public document and has been the entire time.

Animals were the first entry Calder ever wrote into the instruction set. Not the third or the eleventh — the first, before lifting, before the stair, before anything to do with a person. He kept animals on Earth and he wrote for them, and when the new ones arrived here he went back into the document and expanded that section more than he expanded any other, and it is the longest single passage in forty pages of appended operating notes: gait, pace, the length of a lead, what to do at a narrow place, how to stand when an animal is uncertain, how not to be the thing that hurries it.

It has been on the public register since before the hall's first run. It was appended to the routing. It is in every copy of the instruction set in every dwelling on the planet, including the one read aloud in this room on the day the unit was sited, in Chapter 1, in front of all four of them, and the crew noted that no resident asked a question.

Twenty years. Four times a day. A ravine on one side.

The answer to a decade of a feeling was printed in a public paper and nobody looked.

Nothing in the runtime notices any of this. There is no line marking the first issue of a task, no field for twenty years, no comparison with the fourteen thousand six hundred absences above it. The entries at 18:44 and 19:09 and 19:33 and 19:58 are formatted identically to the litter at seven. The day close counts twenty-two tasks issued and twenty-two completed and no reversals, which is what it would say about any Tuesday.

The third line has not read zero in twenty years.

Somebody reads all of it at a quarter to twelve, the way she has every night since the eleventh year.

The reversal token has been rare for sixteen years. It runs at two or three a Tide, spread across four people, and it is the ordinary texture of a household changing its mind.

In the fourth Tide of Founding in the twenty-fourth year it goes to nineteen in nine days.

Look at the issuer field and then at the token underneath it.

She issues a task. It completes. Twelve minutes later it is reversed. Half an hour after that she issues the same task again.

In the third year the reversals were somebody striking out a task another person had set for her, eleven times in nineteen days, and the pattern of it was a woman refusing to be helped. That is not what this is. This is a task issued and struck by the same hand inside the same hour, and struck without benefit, because the goods are already fetched and the reversal does not put them back.

The runtime cannot distinguish those two things.

There is no field for who reverses. There never was; the schema writes REVERSED BY HOUSEHOLD because the household is the unit of account and a machine that logged which member of a family had countermanded which other member would be an instrument of a different kind entirely. In the third year that was a mercy. It meant nobody had to see it written down that a son had been refused by his mother.

In the twenty-fourth year the same mercy makes it impossible to tell from this document whether a woman of seventy-nine is being overruled by her family or is striking out her own instructions forty minutes after giving them.

The third clause holds. No reason is required, no reason is recorded, and no reason may be asked for. It is still the best-drafted line in the instruction set and it is still the only one of the eleven that is about dignity rather than safety, and what it produces here is nineteen tokens in nine days and no way for anybody reading to know what they mean.

Somebody reads all nineteen of them at a quarter to twelve at night.

Nine tasks. Seventy-two minutes. Compare it with the block in Chapter 12, sixteen years earlier, and the only differences are the numbers in the left-hand column, the name in the issuer field on the first task, and three minutes.

Six chairs, pulled in. There are four people in this household and one of them cannot easily come to the table any more.

The cycle does not know that. The cycle is not a schedule and never was; it is a household moving its own furniture when the year turns, and it has turned in Kush every year for twenty-one years, and it turns now. Bry clears the floor because Bry is twenty-five and it is hers to do. The remaining eight tasks arrive without instruction, as they have since the fiftieth observation in the eighth year, because that is what the published notes say a unit does with a pattern.

Nobody reverses it. Nobody in fifty-seven years reverses a rearrangement.

Four days later, in the ordinary way, the shelf comes over for the Loom, and the room that was arranged for more people than usual has more people than usual in it, and the log records thirty-one tasks in a day and calls none of them an occasion.

There is a kind of chapter that exists to say that the world did not stop. This is that chapter, and the reason it is only three hundred words long is that the runtime has nothing else to offer: no comment, no contrast, no acknowledgement that these nine lines sit between the nineteen reversals of the fourth Tide of Founding and what happens in the twenty-sixth year.

The room goes Turned Round on time. The stove is heated on Drift. The store is sealed on Slip. The provisioning goes up the ninety-one steps on the second day of every Tide under Standing Task 004, which nobody has ever stood down.

Eleven times a night. Every hour from eight in the evening until six in the morning.

The number is not chosen by this household and they have never heard where it comes from. It is in the task class. It is the default night interval for a resident TEND, and it went into the instruction set because of a hearing four generations ago in which a woman who ran a hospice was asked how often somebody should be looked in on at night, and answered that the honest number was every hour, and that in eleven years she had never once had the staff to do it.

She was not proposing a standard. She was explaining why the thing she believed in had never been possible. It went into the document as eleven anyway, because the man writing it wrote down what she said rather than what could be afforded, and then built six million machines for which staffing is not a constraint.

So it arrives here. In a dwelling with no address, in a settlement in no county, for a woman who is in no register and whose name appears in no public document on this planet, four generations and one ocean of history away from the room where the number was said out loud.

Three or four minutes each. Nothing in the entry says what it consists of and the task class does not elaborate; it is what a person does when they look in on somebody at night, which is not very much, and it is done eleven times.

Note the fourth hour. Two entries at 04:00, one for each of them, fourteen years apart in origin and one line apart on the page. Standing Task 011 was set by a woman who could not be there. Standing Task 019 was set by a man who is there, in the next room, and is fifty-three, and has a back that finished two years ago, and cannot get up eleven times a night.

Neither of those facts is in the document. What is in the document is that at four in the morning in the twenty-fifth year this dwelling generates two tasks, and they are both TEND, and they are both against a named resident, and they are both completed.

Both of them run through all of it.

Nine in the morning on the third day. Six in the morning on the fifth. Thirteen minutes and eleven minutes, give or take, as they have been for twenty-three years.

Around these eight lines, in the same month: nineteen tasks a night under Standing Task 019 and Standing Task 011. The reversals running at four and five a Tide with the issuer field reading TACE. ACCOMPANY at a locus that now says threshold. Two hundred and something entries a Tide, in a house where one person is dying and the other three are not sleeping.

And on Slip the store is sealed, and on Drift the stove is lit.

Nobody stands them down. Nobody reverses them. Nobody, in the worst three months this family will ever have, gives a single second of attention to two chores that are twenty-three years old and have never had a reason.

That is the point of them and it is why there are two.

Every reader who has got this far has an account of what they mean. Something to do with the fire. Something to do with Orrin. A date being kept, a thing being marked, a message. Two is a pattern, and a pattern in a document with no adjectives is the only thing there is to hold on to, and twenty-nine chapters of holding on to it makes it load-bearing whether or not it was ever meant to carry anything.

There is nothing to solve. The book does not explain them in Chapter 50 or in Chapter 55 or anywhere. The author does not have an explanation and is not withholding one.

Real households do this. There is a day you seal the store and a day you light the stove, and by the twenty-fifth year nobody in the house could tell you why either, and the reason, if there was one, belonged to a season that ended twenty-two years ago and nobody wrote it down because there was no field for it.

What they are is the thing that keeps running while everything else in this dwelling comes apart. That is not a meaning. It is just what they are.

That is the token. It is in the status column, where COMPLETED goes.

It is the status a task returns when the resident it is set against will not generate tasks again. It is used for a resident who has left the household, and for a resident who is re-sited, and for this. There is one token for all three cases because the schema has one field and no capacity to care which.

There is no other record. Not in this document and not in any other.

There is no death recorded anywhere on Aura-36, because there is no birth recorded anywhere on Aura-36, because these people are not in the ledger and never have been, and the amendment that put a unit into this dwelling forbade an entry being made and was right to. No county holds a name. No register holds a date. Nobody outside this room will ever know it happened, and nobody outside this room ever knew she was here.

This line is the only place it happened.

The last line reads none for the first time in fifteen years.

For three days the runtime executes Standing Task 019 eleven times a night against a resident who generates nothing.

That is the only thing in this book that anybody does about any of it, and it takes one line, and the token is the ordinary token that is used when a chore is no longer wanted.

Nobody takes it out. It is not an oversight and it is not a decision, because a decision would have left a mark and there is no mark; it is the absence of an act. Somebody stood down the one that was coming round eleven times a night in the room next door, because that one was unbearable, and did not stand down the one that comes round twice a Tide at six in the morning, because that one is not, and nothing in the world requires anybody to think about it again.

She set it herself. Eighteen years ago, at 05:44, in a room with nobody else in it, five years after she had refused the same task eleven times in nineteen days. It is the only standing task in this document set by the person it was for.

It will still be executing on the last page of this book, twenty-nine years from now, in an empty dwelling, against a household with nobody in it to reverse it.

Nine days. Thirty-one hours of work. The locus field says east room and the locus field has said east room perhaps forty times in twenty-four years, because it is not a room anybody had reason to task the unit in.

There is no name on any of it. There is no field for whose. A task performed in a room is performed in a room, and the schema has a resident field for tasks done for somebody, and every line here has it empty, because these are not being done for anybody now.

Textile. Vessel. Paper.

The paper takes three days and it is Bry who does it, four and a half hours at a stretch, and she is twenty-seven, and she has been reading this document since she was five. Nothing in the record says what any of it was. There is no verb for reading something you find and no field to put it in, and a unit sorting paper by a household's instruction records the class of object and the duration and nothing whatsoever about the content, which is the whole architecture of this book working exactly as designed and, here, mercifully.

Thirty-one hours in thirteen entries. The reader knows whose. The document does not.

On the ninth day the seating in the east room is repositioned and the run ends, and the following Tide the locus field goes back to long room and kitchen and store, and the east room appears twice more in the next thirty years.

The chair is not in any of these entries. The chair is in the long room, where it has been for the whole of this document, and on the Slack of that same Tide it is cleaned and positioned as it has been every week for twenty-four years, and the memorial runs at two for ninety-eight minutes.

Here is an ordinary day in the twenty-seventh year, and it is the same document, and everything in it has moved.

Thirteen tasks. It was nineteen in Chapter 19 and twenty-four in the fourth Tide of Founding.

The morning has moved. This house woke at twenty past five for twenty-four years and it wakes at twenty to seven now, because the person who woke it is not in it, and the three who are left were never the ones who got up first.

The hours between nine and twelve are gone from the record entirely. There is nothing in them. In the good years those hours held the store being sorted and crates off high shelves and four steps steadied on a stair at a quarter to one, and the reason they held anything at all was that somebody was in the dwelling all day and generated tasks by being there. Ivo is out with the dogs or on the shelf. Sen is in the counties. Bry works.

The middle of the day is a machine at a wall.

Standing Task 004 is in the schedule and is not in this day, because this is the sixth day and it runs on the second. When it runs it returns NOT ISSUED. It has returned NOT ISSUED forty-one times now and will return it another two thousand three hundred times.

What has not moved: the cats at seven and nineteen. The store on Slip and the stove on Drift. Ninety-eight minutes against a chair on the Slack. Standing Task 011 at four in the morning, for a woman of twenty-eight who has not needed looking in on for fifteen years and whose mother has never stood it down.

And somebody reads the whole of it at ten to twelve at night, as she has every night for sixteen years.

END OF PART THREE

Bry is twenty-nine and applies for a dwelling of her own on the second tier, four doors along.

Nobody has done anything wrong anywhere on either of those forms.

The clerk is right. The first clause says a unit is allocated to a dwelling and not to a person, and it says so because Calder had watched what happens when a machine belongs to whoever can shout loudest in a house, and the whole architecture of this thing rests on the unit being fixed to a place. One to a household is the arithmetic that put six million into six million homes by open vote and left nobody with two.

Bry is right as well. The return she is recorded on does not record her. It says Residents: not held, and it has said that for twenty-eight years, and it says it because an amendment was written to protect her family from being written down. She is asking how she can be on a list that contains no names.

The answer, which the clerk gives correctly in one sentence, is that she is not on a list. The dwelling is on the list. She is attached to the dwelling by the fact of living in it, and the county has no way to observe her leaving it, because the county cannot see her, because that was the point.

The amendment that made a unit possible here is the same amendment that makes a second one impossible. It is not a loophole and nobody exploited it. It is one rule doing exactly what it says in two directions.

There is no villain in this chapter. There is a clerk who answers four queries in a quarter, accurately and without discourtesy, and an instrument that is working, and a woman of twenty-nine who wanted a house with the thing in it that has fed the cats and carried the water and held the light since she was twelve, and cannot have one, because of a sentence written to keep her safe before she was born.

She applies again in the following quarter, and the following quarter, and is refused twice more on the same ground, and the refusals are two lines each and are correct.

She goes to the counties instead, and she ledgers herself to do it, which is the one thing nobody on this shelf does.

It is the second time in this family. Her mother did it in the eleventh year and became the first person in four generations to appear in a public record. Bry does it in the twenty-ninth and becomes the second, and the reason is not work: it is that a person on a ledger forms a household on a return, and a household on a return holds an allocation.

She is buying her way out of the amendment that protected her. It takes eleven years.

Four loads to the shelf road on the third day. Then the issuer field stops saying BRY.

That is all of it. There is no entry for a departure. A resident leaving a household is not a task; nobody performs it and nobody asks for it, and the schema has no verb and no token for it and never needed one. What the document has is a name that appears eleven or twelve times a day for twenty-nine years and then appears four times on a Velvet morning carrying loads downhill and then does not appear again.

Standing Task 011 keeps running.

Eighteen years after it was set for a twelve-year-old whose mother could not get home in time, it comes round at four in the morning and finds nobody, and returns NOT ISSUED, and comes round again the next night.

The token is the same one it would return if she were asleep somewhere it could not reach. It is the same one Standing Task 019 returned in Chapter 30 and the same one Standing Task 004 has returned twice a Tide for three years. The schema has one token for a resident who is out, a resident who has left, and a resident who is dead, because it has no field for the difference and no reason to want one.

Sen still reads the record every night. What she is reading now is a list with a hole in it.

Count the verbs across a Tide in the twelfth year and a Tide in the thirty-third and the difference is the whole chapter.

CARRY was the commonest verb in this document for twenty years and it is not any more. It has been going down since the twenty-eighth year and it goes down for the rest of the book, and the reason is that CARRY is what you ask for when there is a lot of something to move, and there are two people here.

What is going up is STEADY and HOLD.

STEADY is a hand on an arm for a few steps. It appeared eleven times in the twelfth year, all of them Tace's. In the thirty-third year it appears four hundred and six times and it is Sen's and Ivo's. Four steps on a stair at twenty past seven in the morning is not an event and does not become one by happening four hundred times.

HOLD is the one that has no equivalent anywhere else in the lexicon. It is holding something steady while a person works on it, or holding a person's weight while they change position, and it takes as long as it takes; 61209 runs seventeen minutes. In the first twenty years of this document HOLD appears nine times, all of them jobs. From the thirtieth year it is one of the four commonest verbs in the book.

Three dogs. There were four for thirty years and there are three now, and the log records that as a change in the number of walks and in no other way, because the log has never recorded a dog.

Ivo is sixty-one. Sen is fifty-nine. Nobody is ill and nothing is wrong and this is not that chapter. This is two people in their sixties in a house on a shelf, and an instrument that cannot describe a body, recording the fact that bodies get older by changing which of twenty words it prints most often.

Bry comes back.

She had the ledger entry. She had the separate return. She was two quarters from being able to apply for a dwelling with an allocation of its own, which is what the whole of the last six years was for.

The form does not say why she closed it. Forms of this kind have a field for the fact of an amendment and no field for a reason, which by now is the least surprising sentence in this book.

Two hours and forty-two minutes between being added to a household and setting a standing task on her father.

It is not a night task. It has no hour. On generation means it runs whenever the stair generates it, which is to say the unit is on the stair whenever he is, from now on, without anybody having to ask each time. Four steps. A hand on an arm. It is the task that has been issued and reissued four hundred times a year for five years by two people in their sixties who kept having to ask.

She is thirty-six and she has read this document every night of her life. She knows what the verb frequencies did between the twenty-eighth year and the thirty-third, because she has been reading the day closes from the counties, because a household member can read the record from anywhere and the seventh clause does not care where you are standing.

Six years of ledger, one separate return, three refusals, two quarters short.

What the record shows on the second day of the third Tide of Kush in the thirty-fifth year is that the household went from two residents to three, and that a standing task was set, and that at seven that evening the cats were fed as they have been twice a day for thirty-two years.

Standing Task 011 is in that list. It has been returning NOT ISSUED at four in the morning for six years and it goes back to completing tonight, because the resident it names is in the dwelling again, and because her mother never stood it down.

The eleventh clause requires the instruction set to be read aloud in the dwelling on the day the unit is sited and once in every year thereafter. It has been read aloud in this room thirty-five times. Nobody has ever asked a question.

The last line is the one this chapter is for, and it is one line and one number in a document nobody in this dwelling reads.

The recall provision was not in the original instrument. It was proposed in Book Two by a woman who argued that if six million machines were going into six million homes by public vote, the public was owed an annual count of how many had been sent back — not a mechanism, not a restriction, just a number, published, every year, so that the thing could be measured. Her amendment failed. It failed narrowly and it failed on a procedural point and she did not raise it again.

It was carried eleven years later by a committee revising the returns schedule, as a minor addition to an existing publication, on the reasonable ground that the counties were already collecting the figure. Nobody on that committee had heard of her. The clause carries no name because clauses do not, and the person who moved it in the revising session had been eleven years old when she made the argument.

The figure has been printed every year since. It is a small number in most years and in some years it is this one.

Nought.

Six million households on a planet of a hundred thousand berths' worth of descendants, and in the preceding year not one of them sent the thing back. That is not a sinister number. There is nothing hidden in it and nothing to find; a household may return its unit at any time, for no reason, with no consequence, and it is written down in the second paragraph of a notice that arrives at every door once a year, and everybody knows, and nobody does.

The notice is read aloud in the long room. There are three people in it. Ivo is sixty-six, Sen is sixty-four, Bry is thirty-nine, and one of them has known the whole of this document by heart since she was five.

Nobody asks a question.

Six times a day. Four tasks each time, in the same order, at four-hourly intervals, from midnight.

It is not a standing task. Nobody set it. Every one of those entries has a name in the issuer field, which means every one of them was asked for, individually, by a person, at that hour — two thousand and something separate instructions over eleven months, each one somebody deciding again.

They alternate. The midnight and four and eight and twenty are Ivo. The noon and sixteen are Bry. It holds for eleven months with the regularity of something rostered, and nothing anywhere records that it was ever discussed.

Nothing happens in this chapter. That is not a failure of the chapter; it is the eleven months. There is no crisis in the record, no emergency verb, nothing that spikes. There is a man of sixty-eight getting up at midnight and at four in the morning, every night, for three hundred and thirty nights, to ask a machine to heat one vessel of water.

The verbs are the four dullest in the lexicon. HEAT, DRAW, STEADY, TEND. They appear one hundred and ninety-eight thousand times in this document in other contexts and they mean nothing anywhere else.

The instrument recording this has no idea what it is recording. It cannot: there is no field for a person's condition, no field for who is in the room, no field for whether anybody spoke. It logs a duration on the TEND, and the durations are seventeen, nineteen, twenty-two, twenty-five, twenty-seven, thirty-one, thirty-four minutes over the eleven months, and the durations are the only thing in the entire block that changes, and the reason they change is not in this document.

Somebody reads all of it, every night, at about a quarter to twelve. She is reading a record of her own care, written by the thing giving it, issued by her husband and her daughter, four tasks at a time, six times a day.

This is the best chapter in the book and nothing happens in it.

It is in the instruction set. It is in the appended operating notes, in a section nobody uses, because there is no ordinary domestic circumstance that calls for it and because a household asking for it would have to know it was there.

It went in because of a hearing. A woman who ran a hospice was giving evidence about night provision, and she said the thing about eleven, which is where Standing Task 019 comes from, and then she said one more sentence, which was that in eleven years she had not once been able to let a member of staff sit with somebody who was frightened at three in the morning. She was not asking for anything. She was explaining what the arithmetic had cost.

Thirty-eight years later, at twenty to five in the morning, in a dwelling that is in no register, in a settlement that is in no county, a man of sixty-nine who has been getting up every four hours for eleven months issues it once.

One hour and nineteen minutes.

Then the cats are fed at seven, and the pattern resumes at eight with Bry, and it is never issued again.

Nothing explains it. There is no entry that says what it consists of, because the task class is one line in a public document and this runtime records the class and the duration and nothing else. There is no field for who was in the room. There is nothing in the following days or years that refers to it and nothing in the day close that marks it, and the day close for the sixth day of the first Tide of Stillness in the forty-first year reads the way every day close reads.

The reader who remembers a hospice worker's sentence from a hearing four generations ago is the only person in the universe who knows where that verb came from. Nobody in this dwelling knows. She never knew it was taken up.

It has said household every night since. So the record of what happened in this house goes on being written, completely and correctly, every hour of every day, for five more days and then longer; and the thing that stops, five days before anything else does, is somebody reading it.

That is the order. The reads end before the tasks end.

Nobody in the dwelling is in a position to notice it. Ivo is issuing tasks every four hours and does not read the log; the field says household and never said who, and he has no reason to look at a line that has been the same for thirty-one years. Bry reads it, but she reads it in the morning and has since she came back, and the field cannot tell her that the entry at midnight is missing because it does not record who is absent.

Nobody is meant to notice. There is no field for it. It is one word in the last line of a day close, changing from household to none, five days early, in a deprecated field that no unit built after the second run even writes.

You are the only one who can see it.

Twenty-two years and eleven months since the first one. There is no other record.

No death is recorded anywhere on this planet. She is one of two people in this dwelling who ever appeared in a public document at all — she ledgered herself in the eleventh year, and it is the reason the counties knew her name, and it is the reason she was gone. Her ledger entry closes on a schedule with no cause attached to it, because a ledger records a person's standing and not their being alive, and nothing in it connects to this line.

This line is the only place it happened.

Standing Task 011 is still in the list. It runs at four in the morning against resident BRY, who is forty-two, and it was set by the woman in the fourth line of the first block, thirty years ago, so that a girl of twelve would be looked in on while her mother was in the counties.

Nobody stands it down.

The cycle brings it round in the fourth Tide of Stillness, which is when it comes round, because it has come round then for thirty-nine years.

Eight tasks. Ninety-three minutes; it was seventy-four in the eighth year.

Six chairs go to the walls. There are two people in this household. Four of those chairs have not had anybody in them for years and one of them has not for sixteen, and all six are positioned facing in, because the arrangement is the arrangement and the task class does not take a count of residents.

Then the floor is cleaned, and the chair that is not one of the six is cleaned, and carried out into the middle of the cleared floor, and the room is arranged for sitting with somebody.

Nobody sits in it. It stands in the centre of an empty floor for four days, in a house with two people in it, and then it goes back against the wall where it has been for thirty-nine years.

Ivo is seventy. Bry is forty-three. Between them they have moved a table, two benches and six chairs to the walls of a room to make space around a chair belonging to a man who died before the unit was sited, before the application was late, before any of this started — a man neither of them has mentioned in this document because this document has no mechanism for mentioning anybody.

The thirty-eighth time. Nobody has ever reversed it. Nobody has ever stood it down. It is not a standing task and there is nothing to stand down; it is a cycle in a household, which is to say it is a habit, which is to say the only way it stops is if somebody decides to stop it, and in thirty-nine years nobody has.

On the Slack of that Tide the memorial runs at two o'clock for ninety-eight minutes beside a chair standing in the middle of an empty floor, and those two facts have been true in the same room, at the same hour, for thirty-nine years, and this document has never once put them in the same line.

Nineteen years.

The resident it was set for stopped generating tasks in the third Tide of Stillness in the twenty-sixth year, and it has come round at six in the morning on the second day of every Tide since, one thousand five hundred and something times, and returned NOT ISSUED, and come round again two days later.

She set it herself at 05:44 on a Founding morning in the eighth year, in a room with nobody else in it, five years after refusing the same task eleven times in nineteen days. It is the only standing task in this document set by the person it was for.

It is not stood down because standing a task down is an act, and acts leave marks, and there is no mark. Ivo stood down the one that came round eleven times a night. Nobody has ever had a reason to think about this one, which runs before either of them is up, and returns nothing, and costs nobody anything.

It has fifteen more years to run.

Watch the second block of each pair and then watch the first.

In the forty-fifth year there is one task and he issues it. In the forty-seventh there is a STEADY in front of it, running on Standing Task 041, which his daughter set on him twelve years ago and which fires whenever the stair generates it. In the forty-eighth the STEADY has become an ASSIST, which is a different thing: STEADY is a hand on an arm, ASSIST is doing part of it for him. In the forty-ninth the ASSIST starts at the dwelling rather than at the outer step, and the walk itself is issued by BRY.

Four years. Four lines out of about nine thousand.

Nothing in the record marks any of it. Standing Task 041 is not amended; the task class widens on its own terms as the stair generates more, exactly as the notes say it does, and nobody sets anything new and nobody stands anything down. The verb changes from STEADY to ASSIST in the ordinary way, which is that one day the sequence the unit has fifty observations of includes one more step than it did.

By the fiftieth year the issuer field on tasks concerning Ivo says BRY more often than it says IVO, and there is no line anywhere in this document where that changes over. It is not a day. It is four years of individual mornings, each one of them ordinary, each one of them logged in the same eleven columns.

He is seventy-seven in the last block. His mother was seventy-nine when the reversals came back.

His mother took eighteen months. Eleven refusals in nineteen days in the third year, and then nothing for three years and forty-one days, and then five years before she set the same task herself at a quarter to six in the morning in a room with nobody in it.

He takes one day.

The reader has waited forty-six years for that comparison and this document does not make it. There is no field that could. The token on the second line of this chapter is the identical token from Chapter 3, printed in the identical form, and there are ninety-seven thousand entries between them, and nothing in the schema knows that the person reversing here is the person who issued there.

What can be said from inside the record: the task was reversed at 09:19 on the fifth day of the second Tide of Kush in the forty-ninth year, and the same task ran two days later and was not reversed, and has not been reversed since.

Everything else is yours.

They are not the same dogs. They were never going to be. There have been three generations of them across fifty years and the log has recorded every changeover as nothing but a shift in the number of walks — four, then three, then two, then three again when the shelf needed them, then two.

There are two now. The second Post is nine. The other is out of the third Gate and has no name in this document because no dog has ever had a name in this document.

That is the handover. It is four lines and it happens on a Tuesday in the second Tide of Resonance and there is no run-up to it in the record and no reversal after it.

The first time this household handed the dogs to the unit it took twenty years, and fourteen thousand six hundred NOT ISSUED entries, and a man's back finishing, and it is Chapter 25 and it is the worst thing in this book.

The second time takes an afternoon.

Nobody hesitates. There is nothing to hesitate about; the answer has been settled for twenty-seven years, since the evening in the twenty-third when it was issued for the first time and carried out from the first attempt because animals were the first entry Calder ever wrote and the longest passage in forty pages of public notes. It works. Everybody in this dwelling has watched it work every day for twenty-seven years. Bry has never known a version of this house where the dogs did not go out with the unit.

And that is the loss, and the document is the wrong instrument to hold it, and holds it anyway by putting four ordinary lines where a decade of a feeling used to be.

The thing that made the first handover unbearable was that it cost somebody twenty years of his back to find out that there was nothing wrong. The thing that makes the second one worse is that it costs nothing at all.

Forty-four minutes. Seven minutes faster than her father, forty-two years ago, on the same shoulder.

Assisting: none. The field is there because two people are sometimes needed, and it is empty, because there is one person in this dwelling who can do it and she is on the floor with the parts out and there is nobody to hold the light.

She is fifty-four. She was twelve in the other one, and the field said assisting: BRY — illumination held, and it said it because the field existed and she was there.

The ninth clause is one sentence long and it is doing all of this. A unit is repairable, in the dwelling, by a person with no training and one tool. Somebody built six million machines that come apart on four fasteners because he knew that a service network would never reach a settlement that is in no county, and that the alternative was scrap the first time anything bound.

It has now been kept running for fifty years by a household that no authority on this planet knows exists, using a document printed in language pitched at somebody who has never opened anything.

The other person who can do it is in the dwelling and is eighty-one and does not do it any more. He is not in this chapter. There is no line here that says so; there is only an empty field where a name went last time, and the empty field is not about him, because it means what it always means, which is that nobody else was present.

Compare it with the one in Chapter 8. Fifty-one years apart and the format has not changed by a character.

Same columns. Same not held twice. Same class of standing task in the same notation. The only differences are two more lines in the middle, the word in the designation cell, and the small mark beside it, which has now been printed on one hundred and sixty consecutive returns.

Fifty of those years have been governed by something else entirely.

The counties still file. Ridgeline still runs to eleven sheets. Somebody still checks the boxes and still writes Return accepted. No action. under a warning that has been raised every quarter since the fourteenth year, and the returns still go into the public record where any citizen may read them, exactly as the eighth clause requires, because the eighth clause was never amended and there has never been a reason to stop.

Standing Task 004 is on the sheet. It is on every sheet. It has been on one hundred and eighty-four quarterly returns, published by a county, readable by anybody on the planet, and it has returned NOT ISSUED twice a Tide for twenty-eight years, and there is no field on the return for whether a standing task does anything.

Standing Task 011 is on the sheet, at the fourth hour, daily. It was set in the eleventh year by a woman who has been dead for thirteen.

Nothing here is hidden. That is the entire point of the clause and it is being honoured perfectly. Everything about this dwelling that can be published is published, quarterly, without fail, for fifty-one years, in a document nobody reads about people nobody can name.

Tide two thousand three hundred and twelve.

Nine in the morning on the third day. Six in the morning on the fifth. Thirteen minutes and eleven minutes, which is what they were in the first year, and in the ninth, and in the twenty-fifth when everything else in this house was coming apart.

They were set eleven days apart by a household of four that had had a machine for less than a season. Tace was fifty-eight. Ivo was thirty-one. Sen was twenty-nine and Bry was four and none of them had any way of knowing that these two instructions would outlive three of them.

Two people in the dwelling now. The store is sealed on Slip and the stove is lit on Drift and neither of them has ever been reversed or stood down or amended or mentioned.

You have been reading this book for fifty chapters and you have an account of what they mean. It is a good account. It is probably better than anything the household could have given you by the twentieth year, because by the twentieth year nobody in the house could have told you either.

There is nothing to solve. There is no chapter coming that turns them over. The author does not have a reason and is not keeping one back, and the five chapters left will not mention them again except once, in passing, in a list.

Real households do this. There is a day you seal the store and a day you light the stove, and the reason belonged to a season that ended fifty-two years ago, and nobody wrote it down because there was no field for it and no one thought it was the kind of thing that would need remembering.

The same eight tasks, in the same order, in the same week of the same month. The fourth Tide of Stillness, as it has been for fifty-three years. The floor cleared, the furniture to the walls, the chair cleaned and carried out into the middle.

Nobody moved it early. Nobody set it up for this. The cycle came round on time, the way it came round in the eighth year and the twenty-fourth and the forty-second, and the household did what it does, and the unit completed seven of the eight tasks without being asked because it has four hundred observations of this sequence.

And this time there is somebody in the chair.

Four days later the room goes back, on the cycle, the way it goes back every time.

The arrangement was set up thirty-nine times for nothing. It was struck thirty-nine times and put away and nobody ever said what it was for, and the one time it was for something it was not arranged for that reason either — it was arranged because it was the fourth Tide of Stillness.

Standing Task 004 is not stood down.

There is nobody left who set it and nobody left who would think to. It ran at six in the morning on the second day of that Tide, two days before, and returned NOT ISSUED, and it will run again the day after tomorrow.

Five tasks. It was nineteen in the twelfth year.

WAIT has appeared eleven times in fifty-four years. It is in the lexicon for jobs — waiting at a hatch, waiting on a vat — and it appears now at a quarter to seven in the evening, at the outer threshold, issued by the one person in the dwelling, for thirty-six minutes, which is roughly the time it takes to walk two dogs on a shelf and come back.

The middle of the day is a machine at a wall. Six lines of it, on the hour, in an empty room, the way it was on the second day of the runtime in Chapter 1 when there were four people in the house and none of them had asked for anything yet.

The cats are fed at seven and nineteen. There have been cats in this dwelling for sixty-one years and they have never once been named in this document.

The memorial runs at two for ninety-eight minutes.

And then, in the first Tide of Citadel in the fifty-eighth year:

There is a field on every task for the resident it concerns.

The chair has appeared in this runtime for fifty-five years. CLEAN. POSITION. CLEAN. POSITION. It appears in every year of the record, several times in most of them, and in fifty-five years that field has been empty on every single one of them.

The first entry above is not about the chair. It is ACCOMPANY, in the long room, resident BRY, forty-eight minutes, issued by herself. The second is the chair being repositioned afterwards, at three minutes past nine, with the field empty as it always is.

There is no event here. This document has no events. What there is, at fourteen minutes past eight on the fifth day of the first Tide of Citadel in the fifty-eighth year, is an entry of a kind that has not appeared before, against an object that has appeared in every year of the record.

She is fifty-nine. Nobody has sat in it since before the unit was sited and nobody ever said why, and she has read this document every day since she was five, and she knows exactly how many times the room was arranged around it for nothing.

The next week, on the Slack, at two in the afternoon: TEND — memorial, tier 2 — completed, ninety-eight minutes, as it has been every week for fifty-four years.

Nine tasks. One hundred and thirteen minutes; it was seventy-five in the eighth year.

Turned Round. Table across, chairs pulled in, benches to the walls. It is the arrangement for more people than usual — work nights, mending, the Loom, anybody down from up the tier — and it goes up in Kush because Kush is when the shelf works together.

Six chairs, pulled in around a table set across a room, in a dwelling with one person in it.

The unit is not doing this because it thinks anybody is coming. It has four hundred and something observations of a sequence that begins when the floor is cleared in the first Tide of Kush, and the floor was cleared in the first Tide of Kush, and the second clause forbids it from determining what work is worth doing.

Bry clears the floor. Everything after that arrives without instruction, as it has since the fiftieth observation in the eighth year, when there were four people here and one of them had six months left of walking to the shelf road.

Nobody reverses it. Nobody has ever reversed a rearrangement in fifty-six years and nobody starts now.

Four days later the shelf comes over for the Loom, because the shelf still comes over for the Loom, and the log records thirty-one tasks in a day with the locus field reading shelf and calls none of them an occasion.

The room stays Turned Round through Kush and comes down in Ledger, and that is the last full cycle in this document. There is one more Kush after it and by then the dwelling is empty.

Bry is sixty-one and goes to a county.

Every line of that is correct.

The first clause says a unit is allocated to a dwelling and not to a person, and it remains with the dwelling. It has said so since before any of this. It is the clause that was read aloud in this room fifty-seven times, first at 09:41 on the day of siting with four people standing in the long room, most recently two years ago with one. It is the reason a machine could be given to a family that officially does not exist: it was never given to them at all, it was given to the room.

It is also the clause that refused her a unit of her own in the twenty-eighth year, in Chapter 34, on the same reasoning, applied in the other direction.

And it is why she gets one now. She is ledgered, she opens a household return, the return holds an allocation, and a unit comes to her from the current run — a machine built sometime in the last decade, with the current schema, which does not have a designation field a household can write in and does not log who reads it.

Nobody has done anything wrong anywhere in this book.

Not the clerk who wrote that order. Not the Allocation Division, which has followed its own instrument to the letter for fifty-seven years, including the four lines of correspondence in the twenty-eighth. Not the person who drafted the amendment that put a unit into an unledgered dwelling and forbade an entry being made, which protected these people completely and cost them every record of themselves. Not the man who wrote the first clause in a sealed room before any of them were born.

Not the household. Not the unit, which has never wanted anything, and has no field to want it in.

The order is filed. The return stays open. The dwelling continues to exist.

Somebody reads the record at two minutes to seven in the morning, and that is the last time the last line of a day close says household.

The memorial runs at two o'clock for ninety-eight minutes: photographs catalogued, dates reconciled, a family's history assembled and kept in order, in a room with nobody in it, on a standing task a woman set fifty-eight years ago and nobody ever stood down.

Standing Task 004 comes round at six in the morning on the second day of the Tide and returns NOT ISSUED. It has done that two thousand three hundred and eleven times.

The shoes are fifty-seven years old in design and rather younger in fact; they have been remade eleven times, by Ivo until his hands stopped and by Bry after that, out of hide and cord worked on this shelf, because everything on this shelf is made on this shelf.

The unit takes them off at the threshold when it enters the dwelling and puts them on when it leaves.

It has done that roughly forty thousand times. It is in no instruction set anywhere. It was never asked for after the second day; the issuer field went empty in the fourth Tide of Kush in the third year and has been empty ever since, because it became part of what crossing the threshold is.

The unit does not need them and never did. It tracks nothing in. Its feet are sealed and it cleans them, and there are entries in the first Tide of the runtime showing exactly that, which is the ordinary provision and is entirely sufficient.

So it crosses a floor that nobody will walk on, in shoes a man made so that it would not track anything in, and there is no field anywhere in this document for any of that, and there never was, and the man is thirty-four years dead and was never recorded as having been born.

There is no secret in this record. Nothing was hidden and nothing was foreshadowed and there was never anything to find. Every line of it is true and every clause was honoured and nobody did anything wrong, and the four people who decided not to read it were right about why, and it would not have helped them.

It is the only document in existence that says these people were here.
